At the Detroit Motor Show, BMW has officially confirmed that the 2013 M5 sedan will be offered with a six-speed manual transmission in the U.S.
The 6-speed manual will be available from the start of production this summer and will be offered as a no-cost alternative to the standard 7-speed M-Double Clutch Transmission (M-DCT).
The manual transmission was a popular choice in the previous generation of the M5, but European buyers were only offered the automatic gearbox, and it appears likely that arrangement will remain for the latest model. BMW should offer this in Europe as well. We hope it provokes AMG to also offer a manual gearbox option for their hot rods.
Choose the manual, and you’ll still get the same final drive ratio and active rear differential every other new M5 driver gets, though you might have to live without launch control.
No performance figures have been released though expect the M-DCT to offer slightly faster acceleration and better mileage.
